Catching up with Melanie Bee

It’s been awhile since I’ve published here on Hive Talkin’ so I thought I would bring you a recap of what this bee has been up to in recent months. I’ve been buzzing around town spreading the word about personal branding, the car world and even Harry Potter.

Taught students the value of personal branding to land a job…

At the end of March, I was welcomed back to American University to speak to the regional PRSSA Two Worlds conference about personal branding and its importance. This is my second appearance before AU students to discuss how to build an online personal brand – even before joining the workforce. Thanks to AU PRSSA president, Morgan Gress for including me on the panel with AU alums and public relations enthusiasts, Ashley Wolos and Jessica Noonan.

Headed New York, New York for cars, cars, cars…

Earlier this month, I took the fast track (read Acela) to the Big Apple for two key automotive industry events – the NADA IHS Automotive Forum and the 20120 New York International Auto Show.

I heard from automotive industry leaders, dealers, and media at the forum on Tuesday, April 3. Nissan CEO Carlos Ghosn provided an industry-wide perspective on the adoption of electric vehicles in America to the group saying, “We’re just starting the story with the EV, the zero emissions vehicle.”

Putting on my auto blogger hat, I tweeted the conference live. Check out the event hash tag #NADAIHS if you’d like to catch up on what was said while there!

Following the Automotive Forum, I hit up NYIAS for my blog BeCarChic.com, reporting on some of the most anticipated car reveals of the year, including the new SRT Viper (formerly known as a Dodge Viper). If you love 640 horsepower and beautiful curves, then feast your eyes on this.

Perfect practice makes perfect…

The Symphony Orchestra of Arlington has been practicing hard for our upcoming concert featuring music from all eight Harry Potter films! In case you missed it, I’ve been playing violin with the orchestra since the start of 2011.

You’re invited to join us for our festive, family-friendly concert on Friday, April 27 starting at 6:00 p.m. We will have face painters, a magician, and a wonderful show for Harry Potter fanatics or just anyone who enjoys listening to a beautifully composed music score.

Go here to learn more about the concert and to purchase tickets. Follow the orchestra on Twitter here for more up-to-date news.

Well, that’s a wrap for this buzzy bee. I hope you’ll keep in touch with me as I’m on-the-go!

Beekeeper Group welcomes Alex Dickinson to the Hive

Just last week, we welcomed our newest bee to the office (or as we like to call it, the Hive). Meet Alexandra Dickinson – or Alex, as she prefers to be called – who joins Beekeeper Group as an Account Manager.

As expected, our fifth hire definitely adds to the diverse and fun atmosphere. Not only is she well-versed in the life of Abraham Lincoln (a personal passion she’s got a Tumblr for), but Alex also loves everything social media.

Securing a Master’s from George Washington University in 2011, where she studied media strategy and political media systems, Alex went on to help launch and produce C-SPAN’s American History TV programming. While at C-SPAN she assisted in the production of content for air while functioning as a coordinator and project manager for their weekly slot of 48 hours of programming. Alex also helped build a dynamic Twitter following of history fans and C-SPAN aficionados under the @cspanhistory account.

A Michigan native, Alex is a die-hard Tigers and Pistons fan. In keeping with her Detroit Rock City area roots, she once ran a music venue in Ann Arbor called the EQMC.

When she’s not obsessing over Lincoln’s awesomeness, Alex is a tea and coffee enthusiast who’s garnered a passion for latte art. Check out her online musings by following Alex at @alexmae. And stay tuned to Hive Talkin’ as there’s sure to be more from our newest bee!

Blending professional, personal brands comes easy for Gen Y

Last month, I had the pleasure of speaking to a group of undergraduate students at the American University here in Northwest D.C. I was there to talk to the ‘Public Relations Portfolio’ class about how building their “profersonal™” brand – a term coined by Jason Seiden – starts even before they join the workforce.

During our conversation, I realized that for Generation Y, particularly the communicators, the blended brand requires really no transitioning at all – no shift in mentality. For those of us who are older than this newest group entering the professional world, the concept of a “profersonal” brand is a bit more of a challenge.

Today, students see that their jobs, colleagues, people they meet in person (or friend on Facebook), groups and associations are all connected. And these aspects of their lives are definitely connected to them online. The group of AU students have already become well-adjusted to the mix of social media in their daily lives –whether that meant they were connecting with others online over the basketball game score or a class project.

Check out my slide presentation below to learn 5 key tenets for your social media success. Then, tell us your additional thoughts for blending your personal and professional brands for career in the comments below!

Symphony Orchestra of Arlington Performs at the White House

Melanie and the 2011 White House Christmas Tree

As you may recall from a previous blog entry, I play violin with the Symphony Orchestra of Arlington. Recently, a chamber group from the orchestra had the unique opportunity to perform at the White House during their last day of holiday tours for the year on Friday, December 23.

If you’ve never been to the White House during the holiday season, then I highly recommend you put it on your bucket list. Each year, it is the First Lady’s job to determine how to decorate the White House. Much like the influx of tourists to Manhattan to see holiday displays of grandeur, thousands of Americans set their sights on touring the President’s home between Thanksgiving and Christmas. In December alone, the White House welcomed 85,000 guests through its East Wing halls.

I had the opportunity in 2005, my first year in D.C., to tour the festively decorated residence as a member of Capitol Hill staff. This was quite an experience for me back then, and I can say that it was only topped by getting to be the musical entertainment this time around. Our chamber group consisted of roughly 16 musicians ranging in instruments from the violin to the bassoon. We played mostly familiar Christmas carols, but we also performed one of my favorite classical pieces – Concerto Grosso by Corelli, a challenging but beautiful piece.

Some of the coolest aspects of the performance (outside the performance itself!) were that we were placed in the same holding room the White House uses for all of its performers (from Yo Yo Ma to Willie Nelson), we got to tour before playing, we received freshly baked cookies from the White House pastry chef afterward, and we even got memento badges that said ‘White House Holiday Tour Talent’ on them. Oh, and on our way out, we learned that President Obama was upstairs the whole time we played, which makes me wonder if he heard our spirited entertainment.

While guests touring the White House could hear us wherever they were, many people stopped to watch and listen. We interacted with them in between songs, even posing for a few of their photos. As I look back on the many events of 2011, I have to say that this was truly a special way to round out a spectacular year. This holiday season, I can’t think of a bigger treat than to be part of the Symphony Orchestra of Arlington’s chamber group that performed at the White House. Click here to see our photos from the event.

Please come watch our full group perform ‘Broadway Favorites!’ on Friday, January 20, 2012 at the Rosslyn Spectrum Theatre. Learn more here.

Cheers and Happy New Year!

Global Automakers Revs up its Social Media Presence

Our automotive sector client, Global Automakers, has officially ventured into the world of social media. We’re excited to help this association for global automobile manufacturers begin building a successful online community that thrives on engaging relationships with automotive public policy media, industry representatives, and the Hill.

With member companies that range in size and market share, taking to the Twitter channels and Facebook are great ways to stay in touch and educate the public about what the association is doing and what issue areas it is focusing on each year.

Following a rebrand of its former self, known as the Association of International Automobile Manufacturers (AIAM), launching into social media is a natural next step for the association. At the start of 2011, Global Automakers launched a new brand through its website. Take a glance here. They’ve also created a members-only section of the site so they can feed their key stakeholders with up-to-date information.

Please help us welcome Global Automakers into the social media world by giving them a follow and a like today!

Symphony Orchestra of Arlington to Launch Season with Concert & Gala

Most people know me as a car enthusiast, but I also have a more refined side – I play violin with the Symphony Orchestra of Arlington!

Newly formed at the start of 2011, the SOA has quickly grown to be a great group of talented musicians who have a passion for playing their instruments in an orchestral setting.

We are looking forward launching our 2011-2012 season with an opening gala and concert on Saturday, November 5, 2011. For any of you classical music junkies out there, we’ll be performing Dvorak’s New World Symphony. It is certainly a challenging, but beautiful, piece.

I truly enjoy playing violin with the Symphony Orchestra of Arlington. Not only do I use my hand-eye-coordination skills to make music, but I also use them to maintain the group’s social media presence and website (skills that I can attribute to my time here at Beekeeper). Follow us on Twitter for updates!

If you’re interested in attending the Season Opening Gala & Concert, then please click here to learn more and purchase tickets. The event begins with a gala and silent auction at 6:00 p.m. and the concert will start at 7:30 p.m. You may also enjoy a dessert reception and meet-and-greet immediately following the concert.

I hope that you’ll join us in November and for more concerts in the coming year. Click here to see the full lineup.

Welcoming New Bees to the Hive

This fall, Beekeeper Group has a few new worker bees in the hive. We thought it’d be a fun idea to have them write introductory posts about each other. We are excited to have this talented duo, although we’ll certainly miss having Hannah Levy around (thanks for your hard work!)

Read on to get to know Tayler Lofquist and Salomone Baquis – and their hilarious takes on their first impressions of Beekeeper, each other, and much more. Enjoy!

Tayler Lofquist, Account Coordinator

When I learned I would be starting at Beekeeper on the same day as Salomone, one thought came immediately to mind:  how in the world do you pronounce his name?  I didn’t want to be “that girl” who messed it up on the first day, and I secretly hoped that he just went by Sal.

But soon after meeting my fellow newbie, those fears were dispelled.  His Twitter name provides an easy, phonetic answer to my question (sol-uh-min, in case you were wondering) and he seemed laid back enough that any mistake on my part would have been taken in stride.

Our first day in the office allowed Salomone and I to get to know each other while also being introduced to the ins and outs of Beekeeper.  We found out that we are both employed history majors, perhaps a rare breed in this economy, and we are both allergic to tree nuts.  Salomone and I also share a budding interest in jazz and bluegrass music, and he taught me a thing or two about his new banjo hobby.

Perhaps one of the greatest bonding moments Salomone and I had on our first day was over our love of bad puns.  It all started with a reference to breaking out in “hives” because of our allergies, which was all too appropriate at a place called Beekeeper.  There are sure to be many bad puns and good times ahead, and I’m happy to have Sal along with me for the ride.

Salomone Baquis, Research Assistant

Tayler Lofquist is a hard person to pin down. It’s not that she’s unapproachable or evasive; on the contrary, she’s friendly and open and inexplicably eager to listen to her fellow colleague drone on about himself in ways that would inspire a well-lacquered glaze to form over a lesser person’s eyeballs. It’s more that she just refuses to submit to convention. For how, let’s turn to some bold text:

[Inter]Stellar Political Experience:

The closest most DC political staffers have gotten to outer space is the Capitol rotunda. In addition to a congressional internship, Tayler spent a year working for NASA. You know, the one with the rockets. Future employers take note.

Nut allergy – what allergy?

These days, it’s not unheard of to be allergic to specific foods like peanuts or fish. Less common are allergies to whole wedges of the food pyramid. Dairy, soy, sugar, gluten; these are among a host of items that Tayler can’t eat. Undaunted, she’s devised her own unique culinary alternatives. I bet you didn’t know you could substitute bananas for eggs.

The Name:

That’s Tayler. Not Taylor. Not Tay-lar. Tayler: with an “e.” Why? Ask her. She’s approachable, remember?

Flying without wings: A Beekeeper in an airship

What do Beekeeper Group and the Goodyear Blimp have in common? ME!

On Monday and Tuesday, I joined a group of 40 people in Akron, Ohio for a product launch hosted by Goodyear. During the event, the tire company introduced a new all-season tire for passenger vehicles. Read more about my full experience on my blog Be Car Chic.

While there was much to learn about the tire manufacturing process and Goodyear’s products, I have to say that the most awesome part of the trip was the chance to ride in the Goodyear Blimp. I mean, how many people can say that?

But my two days in the mid-west weren’t all fun and games. These types of events are great ways to build relationships with fellow automotive industry representatives. And as the auto practice lead here at Beekeeper, that’s an important part of my ongoing role since joining the hive.

The blimp ride lasted 30 minutes, and I was fortunate to get a seat next to the pilot. View my photos here (some ridiculous and some awesome). I even tweeted to my followers from 1,000 feet above ground. Needless to say, it was a cool experience.

If you’ve ever wondered what it would be like to land in the Goodyear blimp, then you’re in luck because I took a brief video while riding shotgun.

Hope you enjoyed the view!

This is How Bees Celebrate Social Media Day

Today, June 30, marks the second annual Social Media Day, and event created by the ever-popular Mashable. People are gathering all across the country in honor of this occasion. While happy hours and in-person gatherings are fun for some, we at Beekeeper like to put our own spin on #SMDayDC. Check out how the Beekeeper Bee celebrated today:

Built our hive of friends by pollinating our Twitter feed and Facebook page.

Checked out what was happening on Google Buzz. (We still don’t get it!)

We listened to our favorite Pandora station – Sting.

We tried – and failed – to get the coveted Swarm Badge by checking into the 9-1-9.

Using social media for individual advocacy

Most people know that I have a background in grassroots advocacy and that I’m passionate about social media. But what you may not realize is that I have an even deeper passion for the automotive industry. Yes, I love cars. Since 2008, I’ve been experimenting with this online medium, and I have been astonished at how quickly it has enabled me to form relationships within the car enthusiast community worldwide. In fact, thanks to the alliances I’ve formed through Twitter, Facebook, and LinkedIn, I’m currently combining advocacy and social media to spread awareness of distracted driving.

Another auto blogger and I have created Distraction Free Fridays (#DFF). We are using our blogs and social media platforms to encourage individuals to pledge to “put their devices aside and focus on the drive” every Friday between now and June 24. So far, we’ve seen some great success on Fridays with folks using the #DFF hash tag in lieu of the typical “Follow Fridays” or #FF hash tag to denote they’re taking the pledge.

This is just one example of how individuals who have a passion for a cause can leverage their contacts – even if they’ve never met them in person before – to help spread the word. How have you used social media to advocate for a cause that you care about personally?

Learn more about Distraction Free Fridays (#DFF) on my blog, Be Car Chic. Then take the pledge for yourself by “liking” our Facebook fan page.
